R. Medley – Artist Biography

His look is sometimes rugged, “ghetto”, and at other times business casual/professional, but his voice is like an angry wolf in sheep’s clothing. He’s a preacher’s son, air force brat, an ex-army officer, ex-homeless man, a Branch Manager of a fortune 100 company by day, but most importantly a fierce rap lyricist and production genius at night. He’s considered the priesthood and he’s been shot, stabbed and saved in the same lifetime.

He is R. Medley aka the Middle Class Negro. Buckle up for this ride. Musically and spiritually, you’re going all over the map.

This Morgantown, WV rap artist with rump shaking, beat shattering energy calls his sound Southern Urban Fierce Esthetic Rap, or “SUFFER”. (He insists it’s a perfectly innocent, non-protest-related acronym.) The story behind his new album, “Volume 1: Da Jointz”, is based on his life, politics, racism, and dance raves he has encountered over the last four years. R. Medley can’t help himself. He absorbs books, newspapers, BET videos, MTV videos, and magazines by the truckload. But never to the point of depression. He’ll drop whatever he’s doing to race to the store to read about Lindsay Lohan in the latest issue of Vanity Fair.

Yes, R. Medley rarely sleeps. How did you guess? He is accessible to anyone who craves art, literature, and intelligent lyrics. His vocal style is reminiscent of 60s protest poets and BLING rappers of today. But while his personal sound is rootsy and raw, his musical ambitions will not stay grounded. When not devouring books and CNN web casts, he produces rap artists, jazz sirens, poets and divas, and even an alternative band. He is drawn to all kinds of art. Intelligence is his sole requirement across all genres.

He’s survived a strictly religious upbringing, a stint in alcoholic rehab, a few close run-ins with the law, a stab wound (While a delivery driver for a Chinese Restaurant in College) and a gunshot wound (while in the Army) and that almost grounded him for good. (Before going to the hospital, he staggered into a bar to have a drink and think his life over.) He may live a little closer to the straight and narrow now, but the anguish, anger, and crazed laughter is still there, and he pours it into his art.
