Sierra de Atapuerca, Cultural Site of Burgos (Castile and Leon, Spain)

During its session at the end of july 2007, the Government of Castile and Leon, Spain has confirmed Sierra de Atapuerca in Burgos as the Cultural Site of Cultural Interest (Espacio Cultural del Bien de Interés Cultural).

This region is a complex and valuable area of great archaeological importance since 1991. Atapuerca archaeological site was declared by UNESCO (World Heritage) in the year 2000.

This area is also known to have been occupied by hominids since at least 1,2 bilion years ago. As a consequence to their existence there are impressive archeopaleontological marks as well as important natural values which make this site to be even more suitable for its consideration as a Cultural Site.

Atapuerca is now the first recognized cultural site in the region of Castile and Leon, the Burgos area. This decision by which Sierra de Atapuerca has been named as Cultural Site, was made under the shelter of a new regulation regarding Castile and Leons' Heritage. According to this law, new strategies Plan PAHIS 2004-2012 have been put in place to highlight the cultural aspects of different territories and regions, by protecting their values and by helping the development of people living in those areas.
