The Deftones was the brainchild of Stephen Carpenter, the Deftones' guitarist. The group is made up of five men: Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham, guitarist Chino Moreno, bassist Chi Cheng, and keyboardist Frank Delgado.
Created in the heart of California, they got their start like many other bands in the music scene-playing in bars, clubs, and as an opening act for headline names, eventually leading to being a headline act themselves with their distinct sound and amazing vocals.
Never giving up and trucking on the road, they made a name for themselves. The release of their debut album "Adrenaline" in 1995 saw a few minor hits, such as "7 Words" and "Bored," selling just over 950,000 copies within the United States. Their second release "Around the Fur," boasted hits such as "Headup," "MX," and "Be Quiet and Drive" and went gold, only eventually selling more than 900,000 copies n the United States.
They say the third time is the charm, and these words held true for the Deftones with their third release, "White Pony." Debuting on the Billboard Charts at number three with release sales of nearly 200,000 copies, this recording has been dubbed the most mature of all releases. Out of the "White Pony" album came hits such as "Digital Bath" and "Change." This release fared far better than previous Deftones' releases, selling more than one million copies to date.
Subsequent Deftones' releases include their self-titled album, released in 2003, which stayed at the top 100 for just over 2 months. This album brought to the fans major hits like "Minerva" and "Hexagram." "Minerva" was featured on the soundtrack of the "True Crime: Streets of LA NHL 2004" video game.
While the Deftones remain a highly popular band, their album sales continue to be on a decline. Their last two releases, "B-Sides & Rarities" and "Saturday Night Wrist," have sold just over 200,000 copies each. This could be contributed to the heavier side of the album, leading fans to wish for the lighter side once again.
