On the one hand, you have the very hip and trendy club type bars, most of which are concentrated on the Calle Uruguay area. On the opposite end of the spectrum are the dive and under-the-radar type bars here. Those can be found throughout the El Cangrejo, Via Espana, and Calle 50 areas. These are your run of the mill pubs, bars, and, karaoke joints that you can find anywhere in the world.
Much like bars around the world, these bars usually have music pumping throughout the place. However, the music may or may not be as varied as one would think. Sometimes you can find yourself in a bar that plays nothing but Tipico music, which is the “typical” music of Panama, featuring drums, wind instruments, and a mix of Salsa and Meringue rhythms. Another often played music genre in bars in Panama is Salsa and Reggaeton. To get away from salsa in this country is pretty much impossible, and the same can be said of reggaeton if the crowd is under 30. Reggaeton, for those that do not know, is a type of music that was created a few years back, and is a mix of rap and reggae. Most of the lyrics are in Spanish, and with the driving rhythms and deep thumping of the base, oftentimes the words are incoherent, even for a native speaker.
Some bars in Panama like Unplugged and El Pavo Real are known as “rock bars” because they are a good venue to hear live music, particularly rock. Both locations are a good place to hear a small concert by a local band, or see a famous Panama rocker listening to an up and coming Panamanian band. Unplugged is in the Calle Uruguay area and El Pavo Real is in Area Bancaria, or the financial district. Both places usually charge a small cover on the weekends, never more than $10.00
La Casona is another good bar in Panama because of the ambiance that comes with combining music with visual stimulation-in this case an art gallery. This is one of my favorite bars in Panama because they often feature a very eclectic mix of music and crowd goers.
So, weather you are looking to hear live music or just want to seen and be seen, the bars in Panama offer an opportunity to do both. Enjoy!
